My family and I wanted to volunteer with this program after we lost our golden retriever, Gracy, last year to lymphoma. It was such a difficult time for us, as many of you know, dogs become like family members. We decided to get involved with CCI so we can love on their dogs and help to provide someone with a life-changing best friend. I have 2 family members with disabilities, so these dogs and the people they serve hold a special place in my heart.
By volunteering as a "puppy raiser", my family is raising Edmond to become a service dog. We received him on June 1, 2011 when he was 8 weeks old, and we will raise for 18 months. In November 2012, Edmond will go to Orlando, FL for Advanced Training. Edmond will then go through 6 months of intensive training to get ready for placement with a recipient. When everything is said and done, he will know over 90 commands!
At 6 months old, Edmond is allowed anywhere the general public is permitted, by state law (with the exception of an operating and labor and delivery room). We'll be able to take him to stores, malls, restaurants and with his "cape" on, he'll know that he's working!
